The Color Purple was derived from a 4.5K source and finished on a 4K DI for its presentation on Ultra HD Blu-ray. There is nothing overtly wrong with it but, if I want to see it, I will reach for the original. ![]() My reaction to The Color Purple was simply lukewarm. Fantasia Barrino has a beautiful voice but, isn’t much of a dramatic actress. Coleman Domingo is a great actor but, was a poor substitute for Danny Glover’s memorable performance as Albert. I thought that, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Corey Hawkins and Taraji P. I did enjoy the musical/dance numbers and the casts handling of them. Specifically, the depiction of the interpersonal relationships between Shug and her father, Albert and his father, Shug and Albert, Celie and Sophia Shug and Albert and Celie and Albert (later in the film). This applied to Shug, Albert/Mister and Celie as well as their interactions with one another and key people in their lives. There were some distinct differences to the narrative here, that I felt diluted the impact of the handing of the characters and their place withing its construct. As someone that appreciates Celie’s journey, which establishes the connectivity, and purposeful foundation, from which the story is derived, I couldn’t help but like that aspect of this telling as well. As such, I wasn’t exactly sure what this musical film based on the story would bring. I am a big fan of 1985’s The Color Purple.
